Batter Bakery - Rosemary Parmesan Scone

Have you ever tried a food item and then immediately wished you hadn't? Not because it was bad, but because now that you have tried it you are going to want it all the time? For me this item is the Rosemary Parmesan Scone from Batter Bakery.

Back when I lived in Boston many, many years ago I used to frequent a Starbucks that offered a spinach and feta cheese scone. That scone was so good that over 12 years later I still think about it. Starbucks procures (or at least they used to) their baked goods from local sellers, so what is offered in one Starbucks won't necessarily be offered in another. To this day that Starbucks was the only place I have ever seen that offers that particular scone. I still think about it because it was one of the very few savory scones that I have ever found, and I am always on the lookout.

I happen to be a huge fan of the savory scone, but most bakeries seem to concentrate on the sweet offerings. I can enjoy a blueberry scone with the rest of them, but I have a fondness for treats more on the salty side. Today I stopped at the Butter Bakery kiosk to pick up some Lavender Sea Salt Shortbread, but something else caught my eye - a Rosemary Parmesan Scone... and there was only one left! Without hesitation I added that to my order, even though I had already eaten breakfast at home.

Already a stream of people have walked by my office and commented on how good the scone looks. I have shared with only one person, because I am selfish and want to eat it all myself. It's crumbly, moist and soft on the inside, crispy on the outside, and fills my mouth with happiness. Rosemary is the dominant flavor over the parmesan, but both flavors are distinct enough to be prominent and blend well together. And like a "true" scone should be, there is butter--lots and lots of butter. A basic scone is comprised of just a few ingredients, but it can be hard to achieve the right consistency and proportions.  Some scones are overly dry and some and too spongy, but this scone is about as perfect as you could get.

The Batter kiosk is located on the corner of California and Kearny, and I often walk by it on my way to the office. This, however, was the first time I have ever stopped there. If you don't look closely you might even miss it, mistaking it for a phone booth. It was helmed by one girl today, who was very sweet and enthusiastic about Batter's wares, and she almost convinced me to pick up some lemon cookies, too. Their website lists a menu of treats for this week, so I imagine that it changes week to week. I encourage everyone to stop by and pick up one of their tasty scones because you won't be disappointed. But, if there is only one savory scone left, please leave that for me!
