Roli Roti - Porchetta Sandwich

Today I came full circle and went back to the place that started my whole food truck obsession, Roli Roti.  Plus, I got lucky and only had to wait for a little over 20 minutes in their queue at the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market. Usually the wait is upwards of 45 minutes, and there is always a chance their not-to-be-missed Porchetta Sandwiches will sell-out, so the short queue made me and my tummy happy.

It was a few weeks ago that I was introduced to Roli Roti by John, a colleague of mine. After hearing him rave about how good their Porchetta Sandwich was, I became totally intrigued. I am not usually a huge fan of pork, so I think had he not taken me there it’s doubtful I would have made this a first choice place to try. But I went anyway and that first sandwich completely changed my views on pork forever. Because of Roli Roti, I am now a fan!

Today John and I went again, and my sandwich today was just as good as the first time. It might have even been better since I knew what to expect, and my taste buds were salivating. Roli Roti wraps pork loin in pork belly, stuffs it with herbs, and slow roasts it on a rotisserie until the fat from the pork belly bastes the pork loin and turns it crispy. They slice it thick and serve it up on Acme bread with caramelized onions and fresh greens. The sandwich is then sprinkled with coarse sea salt.

This sandwich is probably one of the best I have ever eaten! I prefer to order mine with extra skin, a common request since they sometimes run out of extras, and my herb-infused sandwich crunches with every bite. The pork is moist, juicy, and extremely flavorful. They actually take the bread and rub it in the pork juices before they assemble the sandwich, so the bread soaks up all of the porchetta goodness. The sweet caramelized onions add a layer of complexity, and it all blends together perfectly.

There is a reason that people sometimes wait over an hour for this sandwich: it really is THAT good. I have recommended it to many people, and universally their response is the same – they love it! I ate it only a few hours ago and am not even hungry now, but I am still salivating at the thought of having another. Roli Roti serves up their famous Porchetta Sandwiches at the Ferry Building on Thursdays and Saturdays, as well as other locations noted on their website.
